Department: Nursing Administration Job Title: Unit Manager Reports
To: Unit Director Job Summary: Acting as a resource to the
interdisciplinary team, the nurse manager is a registered
professional nurse who works in conjunction with the Nurse Director
to promote a positive work environment and maintain daily
operations of their assigned department. The nurse manager holds
staff accountable for the delivery of quality care and services
through effective communication, observation, and measurement of
specific interventions/practices and their associated outcomes. The
nurse manager works to achieve clinical, financial, material, and
human resource goals as they pertain to the assigned unit. The
nurse manager plays a pivotal role in staff retention, recruitment,
mentoring, patient and staff satisfaction. Job Responsibilities:
Displays commitment to the mission of the hospital and its values
Accomplish human resource objectives by selecting, orienting,
educating, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and
disciplining staff; communicating job expectations, and ensuring
adherence to policies and procedures. Fosters an environment that
promotes a spirit of inquiry and continuous quality improvement.
Assists in the design and implementation of programs which evaluate
the efficacy of treatment. Monitor and ensure compliance with
accrediting and regulatory agencies. Promote, monitor, and
implement the concepts of quality management and evidence-based
practice. Monitor service areas, recommend approaches for
improvement activities, design new processes, collect and measure
data, review and report performance over time, improve and redesign
processes based on the evaluation and reassess continuously.
Provide programmatic leadership of the clinical component of
assigned areas to ensure quality patient care outcomes. Develop and
implement goals, standards, policies, educational programs,
procedures and practices of clinical care in alignment with
strategic plan. Manage staffing and scheduling processing including
the distribution of present and future FTE's. Assist in
preparation, coordination, and evaluation of annual fiscal
operation and capital equipment budgets for assigned areas. Monitor
and respond to situations that affect daily operations. Assist in
the development and implementation of departmental retention
strategies, recruitment, selection, and discipline of department
personnel. Participate in the development, coaching, motivation,
and evaluation of department personnel. Facilitate employee
understanding of job requirements. Assure availability of
appropriate education to develop and maintain staff competence.
Role models the philosophy of person-centered care. Establish a
compassionate environment. Daily patient/family rounding. Handle
patient complaints/other issues as they arise. Maintains
professional and technical knowledge by attending educational
workshops; reviewing professional publications; and participating
in professional societies. Collaborate with physicians and
multidisciplinary professional staff. Flexible in assuming other
appropriate responsibilities not noted above. Requirements:
Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor's
Degree in Nursing required (Master's degree preferred). Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in specialty area. Licensure:
Currently licensed in the State of New York as a Registered
Professional Nurse. Certification: BLS, ACLS Location and Travel
Requirements: Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center Physical
Requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of
computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads
(up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and
stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to
remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in
lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods
of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the
